FAQ & Feature Guide

Everything you need to know about using Paisa

Getting Started

What is Paisa?

Paisa is a full-featured expense tracker available on iOS, Android, and Web. It runs entirely offline - all your data stays on your device. You can track expenses, income, budgets, goals, loans, subscriptions, and more across 35+ languages.

How do I add my first transaction?

Tap the + button on the home screen. Enter the amount, choose a name, select an account and category, then save. The transaction type defaults to expense - toggle to income or transfer as needed. You can also add a description, labels, people, and places to any transaction.

How do accounts work?

Accounts represent where your money lives - bank accounts, cash, credit cards, digital wallets. Create an account for each source, and every transaction gets linked to one. Your home screen shows the total balance across all accounts.

How do I set up categories?

Categories group your transactions by type (Food, Transport, Entertainment, etc.). Go to the Categories section to add or edit them. Each category can have a custom icon and color. When adding a transaction, select the relevant category to keep your finances organized.

Budgets & Goals

How do I create a budget?

Go to Budgets and tap +. Choose a name, set a spending limit, pick which categories to include, and select a time period (daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly). Paisa tracks spending against your limit in real-time and notifies you when you're approaching it.

Can I have multiple budgets at the same time?

Yes. Create as many budgets as you need - a monthly grocery budget, a weekly entertainment limit, a yearly vacation fund. Each budget independently tracks the categories you assign to it.

What is budget rollover?

When enabled, any unspent budget amount carries over to the next period. If your monthly food budget is $500 and you only spend $400, the next month's budget becomes $600. This works in reverse too - overspending reduces the next period's limit.

How do savings goals work?

Goals let you save toward a target amount by a deadline. Create a goal (e.g. "Vacation - $3,000 by December"), then add contributions over time. A visual progress bar shows how close you are. You can have multiple goals running simultaneously.

Tracking Features

How do I track recurring subscriptions?

Go to Subscriptions and add each recurring charge - Netflix, Spotify, gym membership, etc. Set the billing cycle (weekly, monthly, yearly) and amount. Paisa shows your total monthly subscription cost and reminds you before renewals so you can cancel anything you no longer need.

How does the loan tracker work?

Use Simple Loans to track money you've lent or borrowed. Add the person, amount, and due date. Record partial payments as they happen. Paisa shows a clear dashboard of all outstanding loans - what you owe and what others owe you.

What are Labels, People, and Places?

These are optional tags you can attach to any transaction for deeper organization. Labels are custom tags (e.g. "business trip", "tax deductible"). People links a transaction to someone specific. Places tags it with a location. You can then filter and analyze spending by any of these dimensions.

How does the Bill Splitter work?

Open Bill Splitter and create a new bill. Add participants, enter the total amount, and choose how to split - equally, by percentage, or custom amounts per person. Paisa calculates who owes whom and shows a settlement summary. Mark payments as settled to keep track.

Can I track assets like investments or stocks?

Yes. The Assets feature lets you log investments, mutual funds, stocks, real estate, or any other asset. Add a name, value, and custom icon. Update values over time to see how your net worth changes alongside your regular income and expenses.

Reports & Analytics

What reports can Paisa generate?

Paisa offers spending trends over time, category breakdowns, income vs expense comparisons, and custom date range reports. You can filter by account, category, label, person, or place. Reports can be exported as PDF or CSV for your records.

How do I export my data?

Go to Reports and select the date range you want. Tap the export button to generate a PDF with a full transaction table, or export as CSV for spreadsheet analysis. You can also use the Search page to filter specific transactions and export just those results.

What does the home screen trend graph show?

The trend graph on the home screen displays your monthly income and expenses side by side over recent months. It helps you spot patterns at a glance - are you spending more than last month? Is your income growing? Tap it to see detailed analytics.

Customization

Can I customize the home screen?

Yes. Long-press and drag the summary cards on your home screen to reorder them. You can choose which widgets to display - total balance, budgets, recent transactions, trend graph, and more. The layout adapts to both phones and tablets.

How do I change the app theme and colors?

Go to Settings and select your preferred theme. You can choose from multiple color schemes and toggle between light and dark mode. Category and account icons are also customizable with different colors and icon choices.

Does Paisa support my language?

Paisa supports 35+ languages including English, Spanish, French, German, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, and many more. The app follows your device's language setting automatically, or you can set it manually in Settings.

Can I use transaction templates?

Yes. Create templates for transactions you add frequently - morning coffee, weekly groceries, monthly rent. Templates pre-fill the amount, name, account, and category. Just tap a template, confirm, and the transaction is added instantly.

Data & Privacy

Is my data stored online?

No. Paisa stores all data locally on your device. Nothing is uploaded to any server. Your financial information never leaves your phone unless you explicitly choose to back it up to your own cloud storage.

How do I backup and restore my data?

Go to Settings and select Backup. You can export your data to your device storage, or set up automatic backups to Google Drive or iCloud. To restore, use the same screen and select your backup file. Your entire financial history is preserved.

Can I import transactions from another app?

Yes. Paisa supports CSV import with a guided process. Download the CSV template from the import screen, fill in your transactions, and import the file. The app maps columns automatically and lets you review before saving.

How do I transfer data to a new phone?

Create a backup on your old device (to Google Drive, iCloud, or a local file). Install Paisa on the new device, go to Settings, and restore from your backup. All accounts, categories, transactions, and settings will be restored.

Widgets & Automation

How do home screen widgets work?

Add Paisa widgets to your phone's home screen to see your finances without opening the app. Available widgets include total balance, budget progress, and a quick-add button. On iOS, long-press the home screen and tap +. On Android, long-press and select Widgets.

Can I add transactions without opening the app?

Yes, in multiple ways. Use the home screen widget's quick-add button. Set up deep links with Siri Shortcuts (iOS) or Tasker (Android) to add common transactions with a voice command or tap. See the Automation page for the full deep link guide.

Does Paisa send notifications?

Paisa can send reminders for recurring transactions, budget limit warnings, loan due dates, and subscription renewals. Configure which notifications you want in Settings. All notifications are local - no server involved.
